the world premiere performance of Taiwan Chorus
@ Shady Grove Adventist Nursing & Rehabilitation Center

Ladies and Gentlemen,

On behalf of our president Mr. Lee, our conductor and all members of

The Greater Washington Taiwanese American Chorus, I am thrilled to

announce to you that today's performance would be the world premiere

of our Chorus, and I'm sure you all can feel our excitement.

The first song we'll be singing for you is such a classic that if you ask

any Taiwanese to sing you a typical Taiwanese song, more than nine

times out of ten, this'll be the one you'd probably hear. It's called

"Bang Cun Hong", or literally, "Hope", Spring", "Wind", meaning

"Hoping for (or Looking Forward to) Spring Breezes".

The song is about a teenage girl who, in being lovesick for, and

yearning to learn the name of, the handsome boy she had bumped

into earlier during the daytime but had been too shy to ask, mistook

the sound of the night wind for a visitor and thus hastened to answer

the door, yet only to be laughed at by the Moon.

Please do remember also that the song was written in 1933, when

the Taiwan society was still quite a conservative one. Women had

no voice in the matters of their own marriage, and hence can only wait

and hope for the right man to show up at her house and ask her parents

for their daughter's hand.

In 1938, five years after they wrote "Hoping for Spring Breezes"

("Bang Cun Hong"), the same composer and lyricist collaborated

again on another highly successful love song. Only this time in a

much lighter note, and with a much happier ending. We thought

it might be interesting to compare the two songs in one program.

The song is called "Su Gui Ang", and will be the second song

we are going to sing for you this afternoon. Literally, the title

translates to "Four", "Season", "Red", meaning of course

"Four Season Red". It vividly portrays a couple passionately

in love, and painted all four paragraphs of the song in color red:

Spring is for blooming, my love;

Isn't your cheek like a pink blossom that is blushing?

Summer is for boating, my love;

We could stand the heat when the sun in the water is like a ruby falling.

The moon glows best in the Fall, my love;

Your lipstick tastes like cherry and you the apple of my eye will always be shining.

The wind blows worst in the Winter, my love;

I'm not a bit cold because our passion for each other is red-hot and burning.

And now, please enjoy "Bang Cun Hong" ga "Su Gui Ang",

"Hoping for Spring Breezes" and "Four Season Red".

Thank you.

並無法領會歌詞背後婉轉委曲的少女情懷;

言語難說;
